Cake Box Sizes: Chart for Round, Sheet & Tiered Cakes
Cake box size chart: 6" to 16" rounds, half-sheet to full-sheet, plus tiered cake dimensions. All measurements in inches and cm. Custom sizes available for any tier count.
A standard 8-inch two-layer round cake needs about a 10 × 10 × 5-inch box. Sheet cakes step up from there by the quarter, half, and full sheet. Tiered wedding cakes need considerably more height than diameter alone would suggest. The chart below breaks out all three, plus the one-inch rule that keeps frosting off the lid. This post is part of our size guide series, alongside our pizza box sizes and shoe box dimensions guides. For everything else, our full box size guide covers the rest.

Tiered wedding cakes
Round box width follows a simple formula: cake diameter plus 2 inches. That extra space keeps piped borders and fondant details from touching the walls.

How to Measure a Cake for Its Box
Start with the cake’s actual diameter or footprint, not the pan size. Pans run slightly larger than the finished cake once it’s iced. Add 2 inches to the width and length for a round or square cake. Add at least 1 inch of headroom above the tallest point of frosting or decoration too.
That headroom number changes with layer count. A single-layer sheet cake needs about 4 inches of box height. A standard two-layer cake with a buttercream crown needs 5. Three-layer cakes, ganache drips, and anything with piped rosettes need 6 inches or more. Skimp on height and the lid will flatten whatever’s on top the moment it closes.
Round vs. Sheet vs. Tiered: Sizing Logic Changes
These three cake formats scale differently, and the difference matters more than most charts explain.
Round and sheet cakes scale mostly by footprint. Height stays fairly constant across sizes, moving only with layer count. Tiered cakes work the opposite way. A 3-tier wedding cake might share the same 12-inch base diameter as a large round cake. It still needs 14 inches of box height instead of 5. All that extra height is holding tiers stacked on top of each other, not frosting depth.
I’ve seen bakers try to save box cost with a shorter tiered box. They let the top tier peek out instead, and it never ends well. Even a small bump in transit can knock the top tier loose. There’s no fixing that in the parking lot.
Products that fit this guide
A few Easy Box Packaging products that fit what this article covers.
Window cake boxes built with a die-cut window on the lid so a finished cake is visible before the box is opened. Sized around the cake and its board, and printed with your own bakery branding for retail or gifted presentation.
Custom bakery boxes with a window are folding paperboard cartons planned around the baked item's footprint, reveal, and handoff. Choose a tuck-top or related opening, a die-cut viewing panel, printed branding, and a board and finish direction that can be checked against the actual pastry, cake, cookie assortment, or takeaway arrangement.
Custom cupcake bakery boxes are folding paperboard cartons planned around the cupcake footprint, frosting height, quantity, and handoff. Choose an open or enclosed presentation, a fitted insert or divider when the arrangement needs it, printed branding, and a board and finish direction that can be checked against the actual bake.
Custom Cake Slice Boxes built around individual folding cake-slice box sized around one slice, its board, and an aligned closure, giving bakeries a clear way to present and carry the finished product.
Window cake boxes look great on a bakery counter. Customers can see exactly what they’re buying before the box gets taped shut. But that cutout comes with a cost. Prolonged light exposure can shift fondant color. Condensation from temperature swings can also bead up on the window and drip onto the cake underneath.
Solid boxes protect against both. They just don’t sell the cake before it’s opened. Most bakeries split the difference: window boxes for pickup orders, solid boxes for delivery or long transport. Neither choice is wrong. It depends on how far the cake needs to travel, and whether the box itself is doing any selling.
That condensation problem gets more serious, not less, once a cake goes into a freezer. Frozen cake boxes need a board and closure built for the freezer-to-counter temperature swing specifically, a standard bakery box that works fine for same-day delivery can go soft the moment moisture starts condensing on the way out of cold storage.
Custom Cake Box Sizes
The chart above covers round, sheet, and standard tiered formats. It doesn’t cover sculpted cakes, novelty shapes, or drip cakes with toppers that add unpredictable height. Those need a box built around the actual finished cake, not the closest stock size.
Easy Box Packaging builds cake boxes to the exact footprint and height a cake needs. Window cutout or solid lid, either way works. I’ve measured plenty of “10-inch” cakes that needed a 12-inch box once the piping and drip work were factored in. A custom cut removes that guesswork. The box arrives sized for the cake you actually baked, not the one on the label.
The Bottom Line
Cake box sizing comes down to footprint plus headroom, and headroom depends on layers and decoration, not just diameter. Measure the finished cake, not the pan, and size the box to what’s actually on top. Get a quote and get a box built to the cake, not the guess.
Questions, answered
Frequently Asked Questions
What size box do I need for an 8-inch cake?+
A 10 × 10 × 5-inch box fits most standard two-layer 8-inch round cakes. Add an inch of height for taller frosting or a third layer.
How tall does a box need to be for a 3-tier wedding cake?+
Most 3-tier cakes need 12 to 14 inches of box height, depending on tier count and topper height. Measure the finished cake, then add clearance, rather than guessing from tier count alone.
