Most pizzerias run on three box sizes: 12-inch, 14-inch, and 16-inch. The box itself measures about half an inch wider than the pie on each side. A 12-inch pizza actually ships in a 13 × 13-inch box. Below is the full chart from personal size up to catering trays, plus where “standard” stops and custom cutting starts. For sizing on other food and retail packaging, our full box size guide covers the rest.
Size Name | Dimensions (L×W×H, inches) | Dimensions (cm) | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|---|
Personal (8–10″) | 9 × 9 × 1.75 in | 23 × 23 × 4.4 cm | Personal pizzas, lunch specials |
Small (10″) | 10 × 10 × 1.75 in | 25.4 × 25.4 × 4.4 cm | 10″ pizzas |
Medium (12″) | 13 × 13 × 2 in | 33 × 33 × 5 cm | Most common size ordered |
Medium-Large (14″) | 14 × 14 × 2 in | 35.6 × 35.6 × 5 cm | 14″ pizzas |
Large (16″) | 16.5 × 16.5 × 2 in | 41.9 × 41.9 × 5 cm | 16″ pizzas |
Extra Large (18″) | 18.5 × 18.5 × 2 in | 47 × 47 × 5 cm | 18″ pizzas |
Family (20″) | 20 × 20 × 2 in | 50.8 × 50.8 × 5 cm | 20″ family pies |
Party (22″) | 22 × 22 × 2 in | 55.9 × 55.9 × 5 cm | Party orders, group catering |
Catering (24″) | 24 × 24 × 2 in | 61 × 61 × 5 cm | Large catering trays |
That last row is close to where stock sizes end. Nothing above 24″ shows up as a standard, off-the-shelf box in supplier catalogs. Anyone quoting you a 28“, 30”, or 36″ box is cutting it custom, whether they tell you that or not. It’s exactly the kind of job a custom shop like Easy Box Packaging handles routinely, not a special favor.
Measure the pizza itself, not the pan you baked it on, pans often run bigger than the finished pie. Take the diameter at the widest point, then add half an inch of clearance per side. That gap keeps the crust from touching the walls and getting crushed when the lid closes.
Depth matters as much as width. A standard 2-inch box works for a regular hand-tossed or thin crust. Deep-dish and stuffed-crust pizzas need more: 2.5 to 3 inches is typical, and some Chicago-style pies push past that. Order a 2-inch box for a deep-dish pizza and the lid won’t sit flat. It’ll bow in the middle, and that’s the box that arrives looking crushed even though nothing inside actually broke.
Here’s the detail most size charts skip. Steam is the enemy of a good crust. It condenses on the inside of the lid and drips back down. That turns a crisp bottom soggy before the box even reaches the door.

Retail & Product Boxes
A retail counter display groups several packaged units into a customer-facing tray or tiered presentation for a checkout, service desk, or compact retail surface. Specify the individual pack dimensions, unit count, facing, loaded weight, available footprint, board direction, print coverage, and finish so the display can be planned around the actual assortment.
Request a QuoteVents fix this, but only if they’re in the right spot. Side-wall vents work better than lid vents, they let steam escape horizontally instead of pooling under the lid. The corrugated flutes inside the board help too. Each flute is a tiny channel. It carries steam sideways out of the box instead of trapping it against the crust. I’ve seen plenty of otherwise well-made boxes lose points on delivery reviews. The reason is almost always vents punched in the wrong wall. It’s a real trade-off, though: vent too little and the crust steams itself soggy, vent too much and the pizza cools faster on a long delivery run.
Anything with a footprint bigger than 24 inches is custom territory. So is any filling that needs more than 3 inches of clearance. Odd shapes count too, square party pizzas, half-and-half combo trays, anything that isn’t round. Standard tooling doesn’t flex for those.
That’s where Easy Box Packaging comes in. We cut to whatever footprint and depth the pie actually needs, grease-resistant lining included. For pizzerias and delivery chains ordering past a single-location’s needs, our pizza boxes in bulk line covers that footprint-and-volume combination directly. No forcing you into the nearest stock size. There’s no minimum order that makes custom feel out of reach. It’s priced by spec, not by how unusual the request is. It’s the same custom approach we use across our restaurant and food packaging lines, not just pizza.
Sizing up “just in case” is one of the more common packaging mistakes we see. A box that’s too roomy lets the pizza slide around in transit. It arrives worse than one packed snug. If your footprint sits between two standard sizes, round down to the closer fit before you round up.
Standard boxes cover 8 inches up through about 24. Past that, or for anything deep-dish, stuffed-crust, or oddly shaped, custom cutting is the only real option. It’s less of a hassle than most restaurants expect. Get a quote and skip the guesswork on what “large” actually means.
Questions, answered
A 13 × 13 × 2-inch box. The extra half inch on each side is intentional clearance, not a measuring error.
Yes. The footprint stays close to the same. Depth needs to grow to 2.5–3 inches so the lid doesn’t crush the toppings.
