Box size guide

Order the wrong box once and you’ll never eyeball a size again. Too big, and your product slides around in transit with an inch of dead space on every side. Too small, and the lid won’t sit flush no matter how hard you press it down. Either way, you’re repacking the order or eating a return.

Standard box sizes exist because a handful of shapes cover most of what actually ships in the US. A pizza. A pair of shoes. A ring. Eight ounces of candle wax. Below are the real, sourced dimensions for the sizes people search for most. Plus the method for measuring anything that doesn’t match a standard chart. We add a new category every week as we publish a full guide for each one — bookmark this page.

How to Measure Any Product for Packaging

Every size chart on this page starts the same way. Measure the product, not the box you think you need.

Lay the item on its most stable side. Measure length first — the longest edge — then width, then height. That’s the L×W×H order, and it’s how every chart below is written. Round up to the nearest quarter inch. Don’t round down. A box that’s a sixteenth of an inch too tight won’t close. I still see brands try to force a “close enough” measurement anyway — it never works.

Then add clearance. Rigid products like jewelry or electronics need about a quarter inch of space per side. Soft goods like apparel or gift sets need closer to an inch. You’re usually adding tissue paper or a liner. Skip this step and you’ll land on one of the packaging mistakes that kill the unboxing moment. The box measures “right” on paper. Then it won’t actually shut once the product, the insert, and the packing material are all inside it.

A box sized right closes with one clean fold. No bowing at the corners. No leaning on the lid to force it flat. That’s the physical tell that the measurement was right before the box was ever cut.

One more distinction that trips people up: interior versus exterior dimensions. A box listed as “10 × 8 × 4 inches” almost always means the interior. That’s what you can actually fit inside. The exterior runs slightly larger once you account for board thickness. If a supplier doesn’t specify which one they mean, ask. It’s the single most common reason a “correct” box arrives and the product doesn’t fit.

Shipping & Mailer Box Sizes

Shipping is where sizing mistakes cost the most. Carriers price by dimensional weight, not just actual weight. A box with two extra inches of air in it can bump you into a higher rate tier.

Size Name Dimensions (L×W×H, inches) Dimensions (cm) Typical Use
USPS Small Flat Rate 8.69 × 5.44 × 1.75 in 22.1 × 13.8 × 4.4 cm Small, dense items
USPS Medium Flat Rate (top-load) 11.25 × 8.75 × 6 in 28.6 × 22.2 × 15.2 cm Books, small multi-item orders
USPS Medium Flat Rate (side-load) 14.13 × 12 × 3.5 in 35.9 × 30.5 × 8.9 cm Flat or wide items
USPS Large Flat Rate 12.25 × 12 × 6 in 31.1 × 30.5 × 15.2 cm Bulkier orders, multi-item shipments
Small Mailer Box 4 × 4 × 4 in 10.2 × 10.2 × 10.2 cm Jewelry, small accessories
Medium Mailer Box 9 × 6 × 3 in 22.9 × 15.2 × 7.6 cm General merchandise, subscription boxes
Large Mailer Box 14 × 12 × 6 in 35.6 × 30.5 × 15.2 cm Apparel, lifestyle, multi-item orders

USPS Flat Rate boxes are fixed-size and free from any post office. You’re only paying for postage, and the price is the same regardless of weight, up to 70 lbs. That’s worth knowing before you default to a custom mailer for every order. Sometimes the free government box is the better call.

Subscription and ecommerce brands tend to land on a handful of footprints. Beauty and snack boxes usually run 10 × 7 × 2 inches. General merchandise runs closer to 9 × 6 × 3. Apparel needs 12 × 9 × 3 or more. Shipping under a dozen units a week? Don’t bother designing a custom mailer yet. Flat rate will beat it on cost every time. Once volume justifies branded packaging, our guide to custom mailer boxes covers picking the right size. It needs to survive the actual carrier network, not just the photo shoot.

Pizza Box Sizes

Pizza boxes are sized to the pie, with roughly half an inch of clearance on each side. That’s enough room for the box to close without crushing the crust.

Size Name Dimensions (L×W×H, inches) Dimensions (cm) Typical Use
Personal (8–10″) 9 × 9 × 1.75 in 23 × 23 × 4.4 cm Personal pizzas
Small (10″) 10 × 10 × 1.75 in 25.4 × 25.4 × 4.4 cm 10″ pizzas
Medium (12″) 13 × 13 × 2 in 33 × 33 × 5 cm 12″ pizzas
Medium-Large (14″) 14 × 14 × 2 in 35.6 × 35.6 × 5 cm 14″ pizzas
Large (16″) 16.5 × 16.5 × 2 in 41.9 × 41.9 × 5 cm 16″ pizzas
Extra Large (18″) 18.5 × 18.5 × 2 in 47 × 47 × 5 cm 18″ pizzas

We’re building out a full pizza box size chart with deep-dish and stuffed-crust variations. Those run taller than the standard 2-inch depth. It’ll link here the week it publishes.

Shoe Box Dimensions

Size Name Dimensions (L×W×H, inches) Dimensions (cm) Typical Use
Men’s 13 × 8 × 5 in 33 × 20.3 × 12.7 cm Men’s sizes 8–12
Women’s 12 × 7 × 4.5 in 30.5 × 17.8 × 11.4 cm Women’s sizes 5–10
Youth/Kids 10 × 6 × 4 in 25.4 × 15.2 × 10.2 cm Children’s sizes
Boot Box 13 × 8 × 9 in 33 × 20.3 × 22.9 cm Boots, taller footwear

These are working ranges, not hard rules. A boot needs up to 9 inches of height. A sandal or a loafer can get away with 3 to 4.

Envelope Sizes

Size Name Dimensions (inches) Dimensions (cm) Typical Use
A2 4.375 × 5.75 in 11.1 × 14.6 cm RSVP cards, small notes
A6 4.75 × 6.5 in 12.1 × 16.5 cm Greeting cards, photos
A7 5.25 × 7.25 in 13.3 × 18.4 cm Invitations
#10 4.125 × 9.5 in 10.5 × 24.1 cm Letters, invoices, business mail

Cake Box Sizes

Cake boxes are sized by diameter. Depth depends on the number of tiers. A single layer needs about 4 to 5 inches of clearance. Stack two layers and you’re closer to 8 to 10 inches. A three-tier cake usually needs a box 10 to 14 inches tall.

Size Name Dimensions (L×W×H, inches) Dimensions (cm) Typical Use
8″ Cake 10 × 10 × 5 in 25.4 × 25.4 × 12.7 cm Single-layer 8″ round or square
10″ Cake 12 × 12 × 6 in 30.5 × 30.5 × 15.2 cm Single or double-layer 10″ cake
12″ Cake 14 × 14 × 6 in 35.6 × 35.6 × 15.2 cm Larger single or double-layer cakes
Quarter Sheet 14 × 10 × 4 in 35.6 × 25.4 × 10.2 cm Sheet cakes
Half Sheet 18 × 13 × 4 in 45.7 × 33 × 10.2 cm Sheet cakes

Bakers and box suppliers don’t fully agree on exact heights once you get past a single tier. Some quote 8 inches for a two-layer box. Others go to 10. Where sources disagree, we’ve given the wider range rather than picking one number and hoping.

Jewelry Box Sizes

Size Name Dimensions (L×W×H, inches) Dimensions (cm) Typical Use
Ring Box 2 × 2 × 1.5 in 5.1 × 5.1 × 3.8 cm Rings, stud earrings
Necklace Box 7 × 5 × 1.5 in 17.8 × 12.7 × 3.8 cm Necklaces, pendants
Bracelet Box (slim) 8 × 2 × 1 in 20.3 × 5.1 × 2.5 cm Tennis bracelets, chains
Bracelet Box (square) 4 × 4 × 1.5 in 10.2 × 10.2 × 3.8 cm Bangles, cuffs
Jewelry Set Box 8 × 6 × 2 in 20.3 × 15.2 × 5.1 cm Multi-piece sets

Ring boxes are the one category where a quarter inch matters more than anywhere else on this page. Too loose, and the piece shifts around and scuffs the lining. Got a wide cuff or a layered necklace set that doesn’t fit any of these? That’s exactly the kind of job Easy Box Packaging’s jewelry packaging handles as a custom cut.

Gift Box Sizes

Size Name Dimensions (L×W×H, inches) Dimensions (cm) Typical Use
Small 5 × 5 × 3 in 12.7 × 12.7 × 7.6 cm Jewelry, small accessories
Medium 9 × 9 × 3 in 22.9 × 22.9 × 7.6 cm Candles, books, skincare sets
Large 12 × 10 × 4 in 30.5 × 25.4 × 10.2 cm Apparel, shoes, tablets
Extra Large 15 × 15 × 7 in 38.1 × 38.1 × 17.8 cm Multi-item sets, hampers

Candle Box Sizes

Size Name Dimensions (L×W×H, inches) Dimensions (cm) Typical Use
4 oz Jar Candle 3 × 3 × 4 in 7.6 × 7.6 × 10.2 cm Travel-size, sample candles
8 oz Jar Candle 4 × 4 × 5 in 10.2 × 10.2 × 12.7 cm Standard single-wick candles

Add a quarter inch of clearance minimum on jar candles. Glass needs room to breathe. A box cut too tight will crush the label going in. Got odd jar shapes or a multi-candle set? That’s where custom candle packaging tends to beat a standard box.

Cosmetic Box Sizes

Size Name Dimensions (L×W×H, inches) Dimensions (cm) Typical Use
Lipstick Box 1.25 × 1.25 × 3.5–4.5 in 3.2 × 3.2 × 8.9–11.4 cm Lipstick, lip balm tubes
Eyeshadow Palette 3 × 3 × 0.75 in 7.6 × 7.6 × 1.9 cm Single and small palettes
Cosmetic Jar Box 4 × 4 × 3.5 in 10.2 × 10.2 × 8.9 cm Cream, lotion, balm jars

Lipstick box height is the one spec where suppliers genuinely disagree. Some run a slim 3.5-inch tube box. Others build a taller 4.5-inch box with a magnetic flap. Check which style your tube needs before ordering in bulk.

High-gloss finishes look sharp on a cosmetic box under store lighting. But they show fingerprints fast. Worth weighing against a soft-touch laminate if the box gets handled a lot before it sells.

Wine & Bottle Box Dimensions

A standard 750ml bottle runs about 12 inches tall and just under 3 inches at its widest point. Every carrier size below is built around that footprint.

Size Name Dimensions (L×W×H, inches) Dimensions (cm) Typical Use
Single Bottle 3.5 × 3.5 × 12.5 in 8.9 × 8.9 × 31.8 cm One 750ml bottle
6-Bottle Carrier 14 × 9.5 × 6.5 in 35.6 × 24.1 × 16.5 cm Six-bottle case
12-Bottle Shipper 14 × 12 × 16 in 35.6 × 30.5 × 40.6 cm Full-case shipping

CD & DVD Case Sizes

Size Name Dimensions (L×W×H, inches) Dimensions (cm) Typical Use
CD Jewel Case 5.59 × 4.92 × 0.39 in 14.2 × 12.5 × 1 cm Standard CD
DVD Case 7.2 × 5.1 × 0.6 in 18.3 × 13 × 1.5 cm Standard DVD

Custom Sizes: When Standard Doesn’t Fit

Every chart on this page covers what’s common. None of them cover everything. A layered necklace set. A triple-tier cake with an odd footprint. A cosmetic bundle with three mismatched tube heights. A boxed set with two different candle sizes in one shipment. Standard sizes don’t stretch that far.

That’s the gap custom sizing fills. We’ve worked with over 10,000 brands on packaging. Undersized boxes are still one of the most common reasons an order gets reprinted. We cut every box to spec, whatever the product. There’s no minimum order forcing you to guess a standard size just to keep costs down. If nothing above fits, get a free quote. Our team builds the dieline around your exact measurements, instead of the other way around.

I’ve watched brands spend weeks trying to force a product into the nearest standard box. They ask for a custom cut anyway, eventually. Usually because nobody told them custom sizing wasn’t slow or complicated in the first place. For a lot of products, it’s the faster path, not the harder one.

Custom cutting isn’t the right call for everything, though. Need one unit by tomorrow? A padded standard mailer beats waiting on a production run. Custom sizing earns its keep once you’re ordering in volume. Pricing and MOQs vary by specification, so a quote will always beat a guess.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a box size always its interior or exterior measurement? It depends on the supplier, and that’s the problem. Most retail packaging charts list interior dimensions — what actually fits inside. Always confirm before ordering, especially for a tight-fitting product like jewelry or electronics.

Why do the same size names mean different measurements at different places? “Medium” isn’t a standardized term across the packaging industry. A medium mailer at one supplier might be a large somewhere else. Go by the actual inches, not the label.

The Bottom Line

Standard box sizes solve most packaging problems. Use them whenever your product is close enough — they’re cheaper, faster to source, and easier to reorder. But honestly, most brands overthink the size and underthink the clearance. That’s the actual failure point on nearly every “wrong size” complaint we hear.

Packaging that actually fits also makes an order feel considered instead of generic. That plays into why packaging drives repeat purchases in the first place. If your product doesn’t match anything on this page, that’s what custom cutting is for. Request a quote and skip the part where you force a square peg into a round box.
